Life in Afghanistan – Blog #1

Posted by Robert on September 30th, 2010

To read about the ‘Life in Afghanistan’ series that is being featured here, read my letter about meeting Tegan Godfrey.

Robert my friend,

It certainly is a hair raising expirence so far. There are 33,000 people on this base and just about every single one of them has a gun on there hip. There are just taking off every ten minutes to support men in need. There are Afghani locals working here on base as well. They are under constant watch because you can never really trust them. It certainly is a sight to behold with the mountains surrounding us. Dust is constanly kicked up in the air so everytime you try to quech your dried throat you can taste the sand. My living quarters are less then par. It is the size of a less the average college dorm room and there are a total of three people in it. With all our luggage it’s just a big cluster fuck with hardly any space to move. I haven’t recieved a mission yet but I’m told that I’m going to be heading offbase quite a bit. We will be traveling by way of helicopter. We only use convoys as a last resort.

More pictures will follow as soon as I can get a decent signal with my iPod to send them. Well I should be going now. As always I will keep you posted. Let me know how you all do in China and Germany. Good Luck.

‘Not In My House’ Acoustic on Baeble Music

Posted by Rooney on September 23rd, 2010

We’re excited to share another acoustic video that we recorded for Baeble Music.

Anyone who has seen our Brooklyn Bridge Park set with Rooney knows we love Robert Schwartzman’s American Flag guitar. And we love that the guys having a laid back jam session out even more. Now we’ve got both, in an exclusive video the guys spontaneously recorded and sent to us.

‘Holdin’ On’ Acoustic for PopMatters

Posted by Rooney on September 23rd, 2010

Please enjoy an acoustic version of ‘Holdin’ On’ that we recorded for PopMatters!

Rooney has been busy this summer touring their new self-released album Eureka, their third full-length album of sunny California pop with AM radio melodies and harmonies. “Holdin’ On” leads off that album and here the band gives us an exclusive behind-the-scenes glimpse of their touring life, busking their way through the tune on their tour bus. The spare acoustic arrangement is rather nice, putting those harmonies front and center.

Rooney’s Robert Schwartzman discusses the worst possible way to tour, the value of clean socks and more…

1. Tell us about your craziest touring experience.
We toured around Europe by train, which was the worst idea. We had two crews and a bunch of gear and somehow the numbers worked out that a train tour would be less expensive. We had to rent amps and a drum set in each, so we couldn’t dodger certain expenses, and when we arrived in each city by train, we had to take two cabs to the venue. When you’re touring around England, everything is real pricey, so the cabs really broke the bank. Not all trains went directly to each city, so we were switching constantly, which made the gear transfers really tough. We would stand in a row and pass gear down to speed up the process.
