the virgin suicides-- i need a good scene from the movie.
so i am doing a speech on the literary aspects of the novle the virgin suicides, and as a visual aide for my speech i plan on using a scene from the movie. what would be a good scene to use, that won't confuse people who haven't seen the movie or read the book, and that would basicly sum up the theme of the book nicely?
I don't know how well it sums up the theme of the book. Theme in literature terms is tricky, especially when you take into consideration personal opinion. However, for me, The scene where the youngest lisbon sister is speaking to the doctor about why she attempted to kill herself by sliting her wrists, and she says, "obviously, doctor, you've never been a thirteen year old girl."
Or when the narrator is talking about the lisbon girls after their deaths.
"So much has been said about the girls over the years. But we have never found an answer. It didn't matter in the end how old they were, or that they were girls... but only that we had loved them... and that they hadn't heard us calling. Still do not hear us calling them from out of those rooms... where they went to be alone for all time... and where we will never find the pieces to put them back together. "
I like the part where the girl are retained inside home and the guys get to call them and play music at the phone, y'know. I find it special. I haven't read the book but I hope it helps :)
