At the moment, Coconut Records is WAY better than Phantom Planet.

Just an opinion though!

I don't think that's necessarily a consequence of Jason leaving. He hasn't been in the band since August 2003. He quasi-recorded the self-titled album with them, but the only song he's responsible for co-writing on there is "You're Not Welcome Here." I think the downgrade in PP's quality just comes from the fact that the sound they've adopted is pretty damn boring and tired. I like a lot of the new record, but I think only a few songs hold a candle to their previous stuff. I'd say the real change in sound (and--for those that dislike the new stuff--quality) came with the departure of Jacques. But who knows really?

I respect your opinion, and I too am a fan of the Jason Schwartzman, and while Coconut Records is awesome it is nowhere near the quality of current Phantom Planet.

Now, what exactly classifies as old and tired? Self-Titled was one of the best albums to be released in the last 5 years. And Raise the Dead is an amazing album, only slightly less as awesome as the Self-Titled. Raise the Dead, Dropped, Leader, Demon Daughters, Geronimo, Too Much Too Often, I put these tracks right up there with Always On My Mind, Lonely Day, The Happy Ending, and Knowitall. I'll admit I miss PP of the old sometimes when Alex used to actually "sing" and belt out lyrics. But for a band to consistently progress musically and put on quality music is a rarity these days. So it confuses me when people complain about bands, such as Phantom Planet, not being as good as they were when they're better now.

Hey, now. I think it's a matter of opinion as to whether or not they're better now. My opinion is that they're definitely not. And I never said the self-titled wasn't great. I think "By the Bed" is their best-ever song. Maybe I didn't necessarily mean their sound was old and tired. The new album itself just doesn't have much of a relistenable quality to me. I think it's good, sure, but there's nothing extraordinary or especially interesting about it.

When Rilo Kiley's latest came out, there was lots of debate on the messageboard about whether or not the new album truly sucked or whether people just couldn't understand or accept the band's progress. But I think it's very possible to be able to accept the growth of a band without liking an evolution in particular.

Re: I think

This is Phantom Planet's best album. But at the same time all their albums are different so next weak I might start liking one of the others more. They purposefully change from album to album, it keeps them interesting. Also they change, they can't be the same people that they were when they wrote "California" not just because Jason's gone or Jacques' gone but because they're different. Personally I love the sound of this album. I love the Mark Ronson influence, the ska feel, the musical complexity. It helps that that's my aesthetic, but even if it wasn't I'd still respect them for the amount of sheer musical genius and talent they put into the music. I'm sorry but anyone who thinks that it's dull doesn't truly like music. I'm not saying this to be a snooty bitch, I like silly catchy music with and ABA format that uses two chords and has a half step modulation in the middle to create a climax as much as the next person, but that's not all there is to music.
Also I don't understand when some one said that Alex wasn't singing in this album. Sorry I really disagree. He's developed his voice so much, so he plays with it sometimes in interesting ways, he's still singing.
