Hit me with your best shot

OK, so I have basically spent the last couple of years catching up on back catalogs of classic artists and critically hailed bands from some years prior. The consequence is that I really don't know much about music from the past couple of years--save for a few bands that I've always followed. I am looking for good stuff here. What are some of the best albums you know of that came out semi-recently? Recommend away!

i still love their studio albums but i just was really sad in that i legit wanted to see them for 6 years and then it ended up being very anti-climactic.

that and people kept yelling pavement songs and being drunk and annoying.

and my hip gave out so i couldn't stand any more. (yes i am old.)

Yeah, there were a lot of Pavement shoutouts at the Chicago show, too. Surprisingly, Malkmus wasn't a jerk about it. I think ever since the Jicks did an *entire Pavement set* (!!!) in Milwaukee (some time ago), fans are holding out hope for a repeat.

I am forever getting disappointed at shows when I have "must have" songs that I need to hear in order for the show to be complete. Thankfully, Rooney played that song (What For) at Monday's show. It was definitely the highlight of the show.

I saw Janet while she was drumming for Sleater-Kinney and she got to rock pretty hard AND tell jokes.

It would be really waaayyyy eaiser if you told what genre you are listening to. I can be a pretty good advicer in alternative/ indie rock sphere.

However, i always always recommend Beck's "Guero" (2005). The best damn album in the world.

Re: I wish I could do that, but I'm lazy.

I second MGMT - Oracular Spectacular. So good.

She and Him - Volume One

The Good Life - Help Wanted Nights

The Velvet Teen - Cum Laude

Ted Leo and the Pharmacists - Living With the Living

Every Time I Die - The Big Dirty. I'm pretty sure they're not your cup of tea, but I love the album.

Men, Women and Children - S/T

Head Automatica - Popaganda

I haven't listened to much new stuff lately either. I've been very nostalgic for 02-03 for some reason.

Well here are some recent-ish albums that I really love:

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - Baby 81

We Are Scientists - With Love and Squalor

Imogen Heap - Speak For Yourself

The Black Keys - Rubber Factory (they have more recent albums, but they're always so expensive in shops that I haven't got round to buying them yet, but this CD is great).

The Cribs - Men's Needs, Women's Needs, Whatever

Re: some old, some new

well, let's see:

if you haven't already, you should try:

Arctic Monkeys- very upbeat- great lyrics, i prefer the first album: whatever people say I am, it's what i'm not, but the second album is good too

The Last Shadow Puppets- a side project of Alex Turner (lead singer of Arcitic Monkeys)- its like Arctic Monkeys singing James Bond music circa '60s- big orchestral pieces

MGMT- Oracular Spectacular-- some of their songs are trippy, but its good, or if you can getyour hands on the Time To Pretend EP, i like the versions of time to pretend and kids that are on the ep better

The Kooks- Inside In/ Inside Out- Naive was the big single off this album, i like eddie's gun too, as a rooney fan you should like them, they also just cam out with a new album recently Konk

Vampire Weekend- Oxford Comma is a pretty awesome song

Chester French- they are kind of like vampire weekend, they dont really have an album out yet but here's their myspace:
http://www.myspace.com/chesterfrench
they're very fun, they're producing an album with Pharrel right now

The Duke Spirit- Cuts Across the Land, they also have a new album out- Neptune- female lead singer, very cool, i like them a lot

Klaxons- Myths of the Near Future- also, you should lok fo rtheir covers of no diggity and Justin Timberlake's My Love

The Wombats- A Guide to Love, Loss and Desperation

Switches- Heart Tunes to D.E.A.D.- there is an American version of this album- i just dont remember the name

The Subways- Young For Eternity- they also have a new album coming out soon

The Bravery- Sun and Moon- if you listen to the killers, i think you would like them

Re: ...

so I don't really know what kind of music you like exactly but I listen to pretty much everything so I'll try and help....and i know you said semi-recent...but some of these are a few years old...

The libertines (self titile album)- I really liked this album..I thought it was really catchy and fun to listen to.

Ben Folds- Rockin ' the Suburbs- this was a little more "poppy" than his other albums and the stuff he did with Ben Folds Five but it's probably my favorite! It's also really catchy.

I feel a little silly for say this one but Coldplay's A Rush of Blood to the Head. I wasn't a big coldplay fan unitl I heard this album and I was HOOKED! This album isn't quite as slow and so drawn out that it gets boring! I love every song.

Newer albums would be...

Radiohead's In Rainbows..I LOVE this album..I recommend the song 15 step.

M.I.A.'s album KALA is in like my top 5 albums to listen to right now. It's different but definitely something new and fresh.

Also i guess "classic" artists would be(to me anyway) Marvin Gaye. I could listen to him anytime of the day. I think he's one of the best.

What kind of music do you listen to? Then i'll know where to start.

I listen to more solo artists so I may not be of a whole lot of help. And I listen to music that probably not a lot of people listen to. haha.

Thanks to a fellow Rooney Forumer I am now wiser in my musical ways. Mostly with really good old material. Lots of folky/pop stuff.
