I didn't see anyone write that it wasn't hard maintaining good grades and a job! They're just saying that it's possible - which it is!

I strongly doubt that. How many people answer to you at your "job?" The beauty thing about having a higher education is that you don't need to work 7 days a week. Ignorant? It is possible to manage both. Why the hell can't you get a summer job? If you have time to go to California you can go to work this Summer and take a trip next year. Some people juggle raising a family and working and you're saying that high school is taking all of your time?

It really depends on what you are going to California for.

My parents paid for a really sweet 14 day trip to Spain for me where I was immersed in Spanish classes. I mean, the whole trip cost about $2,000, plus took about 500 euros for spending/just in case money. And I was 16 at the time and was still on free babysitting and extra chore detail for a year or so.

If it's for school or something, offer to pay all or part of it back and do extra chores/whatever.

If it's for pleasure, work out a payment plan and get a job. Even if you only pay like half of it back, your parents will probably be surprised at you taking the initiative to work out a payment plan-type agreement and if they see you as being that serious and responsible about it, they will be more likely to help you out.
